Bedrock Wine Co. was founded by Morgan Twain-Peterson in 2007 and focuses on small production wines from many of California’ s most treasured and historic vineyards. The lineup of wines at Bedrock is expanding rapidly, but I think the best of the best are the ancient vineyard Zinfandels, Morgan is clearly passionate about.
Papera Vineyard is situated in the Russian River Valley at the intersection of Piner and Olivet and was planted in 1934 by Charlie Papera. Most vineyards from this era are comprised of a number of mixed black varieties. Papera, on the other hand, is 95% Zinfandel. I ranked Papera highly in my Top 10 Old Vine Zinfandel Vineyards.
Purple in color. 14.5% ABV. Great nose of brambly red fruits, peach, citrus and earth. Medium to full bodied with ample acidity. Claret style with lush, jammy fruits. Boysenberry, raspberry liqueur, baking spices and pepper on the palate. Tremendous length on the finish. Awesome Zinfandel that is showing so well right now. Morgan consistently crafts great wines from this jewel of a vineyard at the intersection of Piner and Olivet. Best over the next 2-3 years.
My rating: 93 points.
The 2019 Papera Ranch Heritage wine will most likely be released this Fall or early next year.
The mailing list at Bedrock is highly recommended. Exceptional wines, fair prices and great customer service. Put your name on the waiting list.
I blogged about Bedrock in The 2018 Zinfandel Chronicles Power Rankings.
Hi Tom, Great review. Bedrock Papera is special. The 2018 was released in a supplemental 2020 release in late April. It was sold out in a blink. Cheers!
Your right of course. I bought a few bottles.
