Bottle Notes, Petite Sirah

New Release Petite Sirahs from Robert Biale Vineyards

Robert Biale Vineyards in Napa has its roots in the 1930s, when the Biale family started growing Zinfandel grapes and other produce on the outskirts of Napa. The family grapes mostly were sold to local wineries, though the Biales saved some to make wine for the family. The winery was formally founded in 1991. The estate grows Zinfandel and Petite Sirah on 25 acres in Napa Valley.

The winery recently sent me samples of some new releases.

2023 Robert Biale Vineyards Petite Sirah Palisades Vineyard – The color of the wine is breathtaking. Dark as night. 14.6% ABV. From a vineyard just north of the town of Calistoga. Savory nose of black and blue fruits, smoked meats, dark chocolate and flowers. Full bodied with mouth watering acidity. Tremendous structure and concentration with a cornucopia of unctuous fruits. Blackberry, blueberry liqueur, smoke and bittersweet chocolate on the palate. Exceptional length on the finish. Monumental Petite Sirah yet still eminently approachable. Best over the next 10-15 years. $68 at the winery and retail. My rating: 95 points.

2024 Robert Biale Vineyards Petite Sirah Royal Punishers – Purple in color. 14.6% ABV. Sublime nose of red and black fruits, scorched earth and cocoa. Medium to full bodied with perfect acidity. Impeccably balanced. Blackberry liquer, plum, cranberry and a hint of blood orange on the palate. Tremendous length on the finish. Compelling Petite Sirah that is about finesse and nuance over power. Best over the next 6-8 years. $55 at the winery and retail. My rating: 94 points.

Petite Sirah was once the dominant grape in Napa Valley and Robert Biale has long been a champion of the varietal. The wines are widely available at retail but you will get a slight discount with a Biale membership. I look forward to visiting on my next trip to Napa.
