2001 Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape – Bottle Notes

Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, in the Rhone Valley, was founded in 1898 by Hippolyte Brunier. Located on the highest terrace of the appellation, the domaine was named for an 18th century telegraph relay tower located nearby. Today the 173-acre domaine is run by Daniel and Frederic Brunier, the great grandsons of the founder. Vieux Télégraphe is one of the appellation’s most admired estates. The vineyards are planted to 65% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 15% Mourvedre and 5% Cinsault and other grapes.

Ruby red in color. 14% ABV. Stunning nose of red fruits, leather and roasted herbs. Medium body with tremendous acidity. Concentrated and powerful with fading fruits. Kirsch, blood, dried cranberries and white pepper on the palate. Exceptional length on the finish. This bottle has been perfectly cellared but the fruit has largely dissipated here and the wine was better in years past. Drink in the near term.

My rating: 90 points.

Look for the 2023 in the $90-$100 range.

  1. Tom, I haven’t had the VT from 2001, so I’m glad to get your note. If you haven’t had the Beaucastel from 2001, you should (and I’d be happy to open a bottle for you) because my rating is more in the 96-97 range for the Beaucastel. The difference is surprising.

    1. Thanks Rick! This bottle definitely underdelivered. However, had a good experience with 01 Vieux Donjon recently. I’ve not had the Beaucastel from 01.
