2016 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Koplen Vineyard – Bottle Notes

The 2016 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Koplen Vineyard was the winning bottle in the March installment of Pick My Next Bottle. The wine was paired with steak and roasted broccoli.

Kosta Browne was founded in the late nineties by Dan Kosta and Michael Browne and has always focused on Sonoma Coast and Russian River Valley Pinot Noir. The winery has changed hands several times. Most recently Kosta Browne was purchased by Duckhorn Wine Company. The waiting list for the Appellation wines is 18 months long and for the coveted 4 Barrel Pinot Noir there is a 12 year waiting list.

Koplen Vineyard lies in the Middle Reach of the Russian River appellation, just off Olivet Road. Dennis Koplen farms the vineyard but 2017 was the last vintage of this wine from KB.

Dark red in color. 14.2% ABV. Beautiful nose of red fruits, baking spices and forest floor. Medium to full bodied with perfect acidity. Notable structure and concentration. Perfectly balanced. Black cherry, pomegranate, cranberry and a touch of soil on the palate. Exceptional length on the finish. Gorgeous Pinot Noir with a unique depth of fruit that should allow this wine to drink well for another 3-5 years.

My rating: 94 points.

The 2023 Kosta Browne Single Vineyard Designates will be released to the mailing list this coming Fall.
