The 2007 Domaine du Pégaü Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée was the winning bottle in the February Installment of Pick My Next Bottle. I’d suggest decanting the bottle for several hours if you open one in the near future.
The family of Domaine du Pegau has roots in Châteauneuf-du-Pape dating back to the mid-17th century. The word Pegau refers to a wine jug discovered in the excavations of the 14th century Pope’s palace in Avignon. Today, the estate is run by the Paul Ferraud and his daughter Laurence.
Crimson in color. 14% ABV. Pretty nose of red fruits, roasted herb, seaweed and garrigue. Medium body with perfect acidity. Impeccably balanced with a core of sweet, lush fruits. Kirsch, cassis liqueur, blood, herbes de Provence and charred meats on the palate. The finish is long with prominent tannins. Stunning, classic CdP from a polarizing vintage the will drink well for another decade. I’ll open my next bottle in 2030.
My rating: 95 points.
Current vintages including the 2020 can be found had for just about $60. Hard to go wrong with this iconic producer of CdP.
