Bottle Notes, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

2004 Domaine du Pégaü Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée – Bottle Notes

The family of Domaine du Pegau has roots in Châteauneuf-du-Pape dating back to the mid-17th century. The word Pegau refers to a wine jug discovered in the excavations of the 14th century Pope’s palace in Avignon. Today, the estate is run by the Paul Ferraud and his daughter Laurence.

Ruby red in color. 14% ABV. Stunning nose of red fruits, garrigue, herbes de Provence and hot, wet asphalt. Medium body with medium acidity. Clean and fresh with great balance. Raspberry, kirsch, iodine and blood on the palate. The finish is long and supple. Delicious, traditional CdP from an overlooked vintage. Perhaps better a year or two ago but still compelling. Best over the next several years.

My rating: 92 points.

Current vintages including the 2020 can be found had for just about $60. Hard to go wrong with this iconic producer of CdP.
