2015 Black Kite Pinot Noir Redwoods’s Edge – Bottle Notes

Black Kite Cellars, a family-run winery, specializing in block-designated Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Founded by Donald and Maureen Green in 2003, Black Kite is named for the beautiful but endangered Black Shouldered Kite that is native to the Anderson Valley. Jeff Gaffner of Saxon Brown is the consulting winemaker.

Redwoods’ Edge is a slightly shaded, distinct block of Kite’s Rest Vineyard.

Crimson in color. 14.2% ABV. Soaring nose of dark fruits, roasted herbs, iron and forest floor. Medium body with strong acidity. Big, powerful and fruit forward. Black cherry, plums, blood and earth on the palate. Nice length on the finish. Paired well with a grilled New York steak but I expect more nuance and subtlety from Black Kite and Anderson Valley in general. Best over the next 1-2 years.

My rating: 88 points.

The wines are available via the mailing list and the Black Kite web site.

  1. I was on their mailing list for a few years. They make some nice wine for sure, however I didn’t enjoy this bottling as much as the other ones. Nice work.
