1998 Leonetti Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve – Bottle Notes

Leonetti Cellar was founded in 1977 by Gary and Nancy Figgins. Leonetti, along with Quilceda Creek and Woodward Canyon put premium Washington Cabernet Sauvignon on the radar of wine consumers across the United States. Leonetti also produces one of the very best domestic Merlots. Leonetti is part of Figgins Family Wine Estates. Chris Figgins is now in charge of the winemaking.

Sourced from Seven-Hills, Windrow and Spring Valley Vineyards. 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12.5% Merlot and 12.5% Petite Verdot.

Ruby red in color with some bricking at the edge of the glass. 13.7% ABV. Stunning nose of black fruits, creme de cassis, Whitman Sampler Box and violets. Medium to full bodied with exquisite acidity and balance. Plush, powerful and concentrated. Black currants, cassis liqueur, tobacco leaves and bittersweet chocolate on the palate. The finish is exceptionally long and silky with mostly resolved tannins. Tremendous Cabernet Sauvignon from a great vintage that has aged beautifully. Absolute perfection! Well stored bottles will drink nicely for another 3-5 years.

My rating: 100 points.

Leonetti was one of my very first mailing lists. Thirty years later I am still a buyer and the wines are better than ever. The winery has done an exceptional job at holding the line on prices. Although the mailing list is full and the waiting list is long the wine is readily available at retail in late March. Look for the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon and 2023 Merlot release early next year.
