Bottle Notes, Syrah

2017 Château de l’Ou Syrah Secret de Schistes – Bottle Notes

Château de l’Ou is a family run estate founded by Séverine and Philippe Bourrier, and lies just to the south of Perpignan, in the plains region of the Roussillon. Séverine, who trained and worked as an oenologist in Bordeaux, oversees the winemaking and normally releases three whites; a classic Côtes du Roussillon Blanc, Côtes Catalanes Blanc Love, and Infiniment de l’Ou Blanc, and three reds; the Infiniment de l’Ou, Secret de Schistes and Velours Noir.

Purple in color. 15.5% ABV. Sublime nose of dark fruits, molten licorice, Whitman Sampler box and rose hips. Full bodied with perfect acidity. Notably well balanced. Blackberry, kirsch liqueur and creme de cassis on the palate. Exceptional length on the finish. Stunning Syrah that goes down easy. Best over the next 2-4 years.

My rating: 94 points.

The wine is not readily available but sells at a compelling price of $40. I’ll buy the 2020 if I can find it.
