Fattoria di Felsina is an historic estate in the Chianti appellation of Tuscany. In 1966 the estate was purchased by the Poggiali family, and today a second generation of the Poggiali family still run the estate. At the edge of the Chianti Classico and Chianti Colli Senesi denominations, the estate counts 475 hectares, of which 61 are planted with vineyard. Gambero Rosso, Italy’s leading wine journal, has often awarded Felsina’s wines with 3 Bicchieri, the journal’s highest rating.
The vineyards are located in Castelnuovo Berardenga, in the southeastern part of the Chianti Classico appellation, northeast of Siena.
Ruby red in color. 13% ABV. Awesome nose of red fruits, licorice, iron and earth. Medium body with strong acidity. Rustic and powerful. Black cherry, blood, roasted herbs and earth on the palate. Tremendous length on the finish. Another delicious Felsina that as always will be best with food. Drink over the next 3-5 years.
My rating: 89 points.
There are not many $25 wines in the world that deliver as consistently as Felsina Chianti. One of the few wines that I will still consider buying by the case. The Riserva at $35 is a pretty compelling buy as well.
I wrote about Felsina previously in Buying More Italian Wine.
