Bottle Notes, Syrah

2017 K Vintners Syrah Motor City Kitty Oldfield-Boushey Vineyard – Bottle Notes

Winemaker Charles Smith opened the doors to his first winery, K Vintners, in December 2001. His first vintage was 330 cases of 1999 K Syrah. K Vintners is about small lots of single-vineyard Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Tempranillo, Sangiovese and field blends of those grapes, all of which are hand-picked, fermented with naturally occurring yeasts and basket pressed.

Boushey Oldfield Block is owned by Dick Boushey, one of the premier vineyard owners in Washington State. This vineyard was planted by Dick with the help of Brennon Leighton. This is the highest elevation plot and has a southwestern slope and sandy volcanic soils. Three clones of Syrah are planted on this site: 383, 174 and Joseph Phelps.

Purple in color. 15% ABV. Savory nose of blue and black fruits, barbecued meats and flowers. Full bodied with ample acidity. Plush, approachable and well balanced. Blueberry, black cherry liqueur, olives and pepper on the palate. The finish is long and supple. Stunning Syrah that is impeccably made. Best over the next 3-5 years.

My rating: 94 points.

Look for the 2019 version of this wine in the $35-$40 range.

This wine was sent to me to pay off a longstanding, yearly baseball bet. Better luck next year Lou!
