Fattoria di Felsina is an historic estate in the Chianti appellation of Tuscany. In 1966 the estate was purchased by the Poggiali family, and today a second generation of the Poggiali family still run the estate. At the edge of the Chianti Classico and Chianti Colli Senesi denominations, the estate counts 475 hectares, of which 61 are planted with vineyard. Gambero Rosso, Italy’s leading wine journal, has often awarded Felsina’s wines with 3 Bicchieri, the journal’s highest rating.
Dark crimson in color. 14% ABV. Rustic nose of red and black fruits, earth, wet stones and flowers. Dry and dusty on the palate with flavors of dried cherries, blood, anise and earth. There is a copious amount of tannin showing on a long, grippy finish. Aging gracefully, well made and fairly priced. All the hallmarks one expects of this wine. From memory I would give a slight nod to the ’04 and ’06. Drink over the next 3-5 years.
My rating: 91 points.
Rancia is a very good value. Current vintages including the ’15 can all be found for around $45-50. Exceptional, age worthy wines that are worth seeking out.
