New Releases from Matchbook Wine Company

Matchbook Wine Company was founded by John and Karl Giguiere in 2004. The winery is located in Zamora, CA in the Dunnigan Hills AVA. The name traces back to John and Karl’s boyhood love of fires. Matchbook currently produces over 15 different wines.

I recently had the opportunity to sample a few of the wineries new releases.

2012 Arsonist Red – 52% Petit Verdot, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Merlot. Garnet in color. 13.8% ABV. Alluring nose of black fruits, pencil and cassis. Lush and warm with nice mouth feel. Medium body with ample acidity. Blackberries, currants, toast and espresso on the palate. Supple tannins on an excellent finish. Approachable now or cellar for 2-4 years. $22 at the winery. My rating: 90 points.

2012 Tinto Rey – 50% Tempranillo, 27% Syrah with small amounts of Petit Verdot, Graciano and Tannat. Crimson in color. 13.9% ABV. Black fruits, leather and pepper on the nose. Rich, plush fruit on the palate. Medium body with nice acidity. Flavors of raspberries, black cherries and black pepper. Smooth and easy to drink. A really good value at $17 from the winery. Drink over the next 3 years. My rating: 89 points.

Both wines represent outstanding values that pair well with food and can be opened any night of the week. What’s not to like?

The tasting room at Matchbook is open daily from 11am to 4:30pm.
