Zinfandel of the Month is a regular feature on Zinfandel Chronicles. Keep in mind that although the Zinfandel of the Month might be an older bottle, the current vintage will be one you can find at retail or via the mailing list.
The July Zinfandel of the Month is the 2012 Bedrock Wine Co. Zinfandel Sodini Vineyard.
Bedrock Wine Co. was founded by Morgan Twain-Peterson in 2007 and focuses on small production wines from many of California’ s most treasured and historic vineyards. The lineup of wines at Bedrock is expanding rapidly, but I think the best of the best are the ancient vineyard Zinfandels, Morgan is clearly passionate about.
Planted in 1905 Sodini Vineyard is located along Limerick Lane in the Russian River Valley. I’ve been a fan of the site dating back to the 90’s when Rochioli was producing a Zinfandel from Sodini. As such I was very excited when Morgan reached an agreement with Steve Sodini to lease and farm the vineyard.
Bright crimson in color. 14.8% ABV. Stunning nose of brambly black and red fruits, spice and a hint of tar. Medium body with exceptional acidity. Great grip and mouthfeel. Raspberry, cherry, blackberry and white pepper on the palate. Slight tannins on a long finish. Simply delicious Zinfandel. Drink over the next 3-5 years.
My rating: 93 points.
I anticipate the 2013 version of Bedrock Sodini will be released in the near future.
The mailing list at Bedrock is highly recommended. Exceptional wines, fair prices and great customer service. Don’t delay.
I blogged about Bedrock recently in the Zinfandel Chronicles Power Rankings.
