Established in the early 1990s, Northstar Winery was founded with a singular, ambitious vision: to create world-class Merlots that could rival the finest examples from Bordeaux. David “Merf” Merfeld joined the Northstar team in 2001 and took over as head winemaker in 2005.
The winery recently sent me samples of their new releases.
2022 Northstar Merlot – Crimson in color. 14.5% ABV. Fantastic nose of red and black fruits, cocoa, leather and flowers. Full bodied with tremendous acidity. Plush, concentrated and impeccably balanced. Currants, cassis, graham cracker and chocolate on the palate. Exceptional length on the finish with prominent silky tannins. Lush, rich Merlot that is approachable now. Best over the next 5-7 years. $50 at the winery and retail. My rating: 93 points.
2022 Northstar Red Blend – Purple in color. 14.5% ABV. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and a touch of Cabernet Franc. Savory nose of black fruits, leather, cedar and graphite. Medium to full bodied with perfect acidity. Blackberry, black currants, dark chocolate and espresso on the palate. Tremendous length on the finish with gritty tannins. Approachable now but this will be better in the years to come. Drink over the next 6-8 years. $70 at the winery and retail. My rating: 94 points.
Northstar has tasting rooms in both Woodinville and Walla Walla. Reservations are suggested. I look forward to visiting on my next excursion to either.
