Fattoria di Felsina is an historic estate in the Chianti appellation of Tuscany. In 1966 the estate was purchased by the Poggiali family, and today a second generation of the Poggiali family still run the estate. At the edge of the Chianti Classico and Chianti Colli Senesi denominations, the estate counts 475 hectares, of which 61 are planted with vineyard. Gambero Rosso, Italy’s leading wine journal, has often awarded Felsina’s wines with 3 Bicchieri, the journal’s highest rating.
The vineyards are located in Castelnuovo Berardenga, in the southeastern part of the Chianti Classico appellation, northeast of Siena.
Crimson in color. 13% ABV. Stunning nose of red fruits, blood, saddle leather and flowers. Medium body with strong acidity. Packed with dark, rustic fruits. Cherry, iron, tobacco leaves and earth on the palate. Tremendous length on the finish. Just delicious with a sausage based pasta dish. Best over the next several years.
My rating: 90 points.
There are not many $25 wines in the world that deliver as consistently as Felsina Chianti. One of the few wines that I will still consider buying by the case. The Riserva at $35 is a pretty compelling buy as well.
