1997 Fontodi Flaccianello della Pieve Toscana – Bottle Notes

The Manetti family, which has run the Fontodi winery since 1968, is a true champion of sangiovese. The 200 acre estate is situated in the “golden basin” known as Conca d’Ora, south of Panzano in Chianti Classico. Their flagship called Flaccianello has been produced since 1981 and is from the estates very best vineyard. Amongst other wines, Fontodi also produces a Chianti Classico Riserva known as Vigna Del Sorbo.

Crimson in color. 13.5% ABV. Beautiful nose of red fruits, leather, cigar box and wet leaves. Medium body with perfect acidity. Remarkable structure at 26 years of age. Incredibly elegant. Cherries, blood, tobacco and earth on the palate. The finish is long and silky. Stunning Flaccianello from a great vintage that has aged brilliantly. Best over the next several years.

My rating: 96 points.

Pricing for this wine has drifted up in recent years and the current 2020 version will set you back right about $200. It is a tough pill to swallow when wines like Tignanello and Cepparello are much more affordable but I will likely put a bottle or two in my cellar.
