Zinfandel of the Month – 2017 Peter Franus Zinfandel Brandlin Vineyard

Zinfandel of the Month is a regular feature on Zinfandel Chronicles. Keep in mind that although the Zinfandel of the Month might be an older bottle, the current vintage will be one you can find at retail or via the mailing list.

The November Zinfandel of the Month is the 2017 Peter Franus Zinfandel Brandlin Vineyard.

I chose this wine as I literally had not had a Peter Franus Zinfandel in over 20 years but do remember being somewhat enamored with the wine long ago when I lived in Sacramento.

Peter Franus founded his winery on Mount Veeder in 1987 and makes a variety of wines including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and this Zinfandel for which he is best know.

Henry Brandlin planted Brandlin Vineyard in the early 1920’s. The Zinfandel is a field blend and these are most likely the oldest vines on Mount Veeder.

Crimson in color. 14.9% ABV. Killer nose of red fruits, anise and pepper. Medium body with medium acidity. Tremendous purity of fruit. Cherry, raspberry, blood orange and pepper on the palate. Exceptional length on the finish. I seriously don’t think I have had a Zinfandel from Peter Franus for over 20 years. My mistake. Seriously good Zinfandel. Best over the next 2-3 years.

My rating: 94 points.

The 2018 version of this wine is available at the winery for $45 and can often be found at retail as well.
