La Rata was founded by Elizabeth Bourcier in 2012. Bourcier, Cayuse’s assistant Vigneron, was inspired by Clos Erasmus of the Priorat region of Spain and crafted this blend. The wine was originally a blend of Grenache from Armada Vineyard and Cabernet from En Cerise Vineyard. Syrah from La Paciencia Vineyard was added after the first vintage. The unique blend was named “The Rat” and thus the Spanish influence, La Rata. The name reflects Bourcier’s zodiac sign, the rat, and also that despite being assistant winemaker at Cayuse, she still considers herself a cellar rat.
Crimson in color. 14.2% ABV. 53% Grenache, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Syrah. Savory nose of red fruits, bacon fat and roasted herbs. Medium body with perfect acidity. The Grenache really shines here with telltale characteristics of the Rocks District. Cherries, game, smoke and minerals on the palate. Exceptional length on the finish. Such a unique and delicious wine. Best over the next 2-4 years.

La Rata only makes this single wine. The winery does not have a mailing list but makes this blend available via Full Pull Wines. I’ve been fortunate to acquire all vintages to date and look forward to following this project in the years to come.
Elizabeth’s father Denis, who was my ISO auditor back in the day, turned me on to this. I am enjoying the 2014 tonight and have a ’15, 1’6 and a couple of 17’s on the shelf!
I have those as well. Might have to open a 15 this Fall.
