Zinfandel of the Month is a regular feature on Zinfandel Chronicles. Keep in mind that although the Zinfandel of the Month might be an older bottle, the current vintage will be one you can find at retail or via the mailing list.
The March Zinfandel of the Month is the 2012 Wonderment Wines Zinfandel Bacigalupi Vineyard.
Wonderment Wines was founded in 2011 by Stephanie Cook. The wines are focused on specific terroir where each wine represents the vineyards distinctive style and expression. Stephanie honed her winemaking skills at Robert Biale Vineyards, Spottswoode Estate and Spy Valley in New Zealand before going out on her own. Wonderment Wines produces Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Petite Sirah and Sauvignon Blanc.
Bacigalupi Vineyard is situated on Westside Road, a few miles south of the town of Healdsburg. The Zinfandel vines date back to the 1950’s.
Crimson in color. 14.9% ABV. Heady nose of brambly red fruits, iron and pepper. Medium body with perfect acidity. Light and elegant with bright fruit in spades. Cherry compote, raspberry liqueur, anise and pepper on the palate. Exceptional length on the finish. Stunning Zinfandel from a historic vineyard. Best over the next 3-5 years.
My rating: 94 points.
$44 at the winery. The Zin and Pinot Noir being produced at Wonderment are notable. The focus on exceptional vineyards is admirable. Lots to like here and certainly a winery to keep an eye on.
This review was based on a sample provided by the winery.
Please let me know if you have a Zinfandel you would like to be considered for the April Zinfandel of the Month.
One of my favorite Zinfandels.
Hi Jeff! Thanks for visiting Zinfandel Chronicles!
Just had a bottle of the 2016 and drank it against the 2015.. both really good examples of Old Vine Zinfandel – would agree with this review, the 2016 is an extremely good example and “stunning” is a good descriptor. This 2016 from Wonderment and the 2016 Burton Ranch Old Vine are great examples of how good zinfandel can be and from very different parts of NoCAL.
