Bottle Notes, Pinot Noir

2006 J. Rochioli Estate Pinot Noir – Bottle Notes

Rochioli is one of the true pioneers in Russian River Valley, with a winemaking history dating back to the the late 1950′s. Joe Rochioli Jr. planted Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the late 1960’s. In the 70’s and early 80’s the grapes were sold to wineries including Davis Bynum and Williams Selyem. In 1987 Rochioli released their first estate wine, the 1985 Rochioli Pinot Noir.

The current winemaker, Tom Rochioli, was inspired to focus on vineyard specific blocks after a trip to Burgundy.  Although best known for their world class Pinot Noir, Rochioli also produces remarkable Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Limited releases include a Syrah and Sparkling Wine.

Rochioli published a detailed map of the Estate Vineyard that is required viewing for fans of the winery.

Light red in color. Almost translucent. Inviting on the nose with scents of dark fruits, earth, fresh mushrooms and baking spices. Medium body with tremendous acidity. Super texture and mouth feel. Flavors of black cherry, nutmeg, cloves and anise. The finish is tremendous. This wine is remarkably still improving in bottle. Better than either of the bottles I had in 2013 and 2014. Although this was my last bottle I think this will drink well for another 2-3 years. This clearly bodes well for the single vineyard designates from 2006.

My rating: 94 points.

The 2014 version of the Estate Pinot Noir will be released early next year. You may still be able to find the 2013 at retail for between $50 and $60.

At present time buying from Rochioli via the mailing list is not an option. The waiting list is several years long for the Estate Wines and even longer for the treasured single vineyard offerings. The Estate wines do show up at retail periodically, and the winery’s Russian River Valley tasting room is still open for public tasting. They may only be pouring a couple of wines, but it’s a great opportunity to buy a bottle for a picnic on their lovely patio and a few more to bring home for the cellar.

I’ve blogged about Rochioli previously in the Zinfandel Chronicles Power Rankings, Reflections on Two Days in the Russian River Valley and the Fab 5 of Mailing Lists.

Rochioli is one of my very favorite wineries. I’ve been buying their wines for over 20 years and that will never change. Highly recommended.
