Marcarini Winery dates back six generations. The Marcarini estate covers 25 hectares and is situated in La Morra in Piedmont. In sourcing fruit for their Barolo, the family owns vineyard plots in La Morra comprising two of the areas best vineyards, Brunate and La Serra. Each is bottled as a separate wine. The wines of Marcarini are fiercely traditional.
Light crimson in color with some bricking at the edge of the glass. 14% ABV. Showstopping nose of red fruits, leather, wet asphalt and camphor. Medium body with strong acidity. Concentration and power that belies a quarter century of bottle age. Dried cherry, cranberry and tobacco leaves on the palate. Exceptional length on the finish with coarse, drying tannins. Outstanding, traditional Barolo that has stood the test of time. As always this is best with some rustic fare. I have a single bottle left that I will open at 30 years of age.
My rating: 93 points.
Marcarini is fairly priced relative to other top notch Barolo. Bottles of the Brunate and La Serra can typically be found for $75-$100. The wine will age for decades.
