Fattoria di Felsina is an historic estate in the Chianti appellation of Tuscany. In 1966 the estate was purchased by the Poggiali family, and today a second generation of the Poggiali family still run the estate. At the edge of the Chianti Classico and Chianti Colli Senesi denominations, the estate counts 475 hectares, of which 61 are planted with vineyard. Gambero Rosso, Italy’s leading wine journal, has often awarded Felsina’s wines with 3 Bicchieri, the journal’s highest rating.
The vineyards are located in Castelnuovo Berardenga, in the southeastern part of the Chianti Classico appellation, northeast of Siena.
Crimson in color. 13.5% ABV. Super nose of red fruits, blood, wet asphalt and flowers. Medium body with strong acidity. Earthy and decidedly rustic. Tart cherry, cranberry, iron and earth on the palate. The finish is long with prominent, gritty tannins. Best with hearty fare and as always a great value. Drink over the next 5-7 years.
My rating: 92 points.
There are not many $25 wines in the world that deliver as consistently as Felsina Chianti. One of the few wines that I will still consider buying by the case. The Riserva at $35 is a pretty compelling buy as well.
I wrote about Felsina previously in Buying More Italian Wine.
Yes, consistently very good. I also buy the Rancia by the six-pack most vintages, and always have good vintages on hand for special Italian meals at home.
I really enjoy the Rancia as well.
