2016 Bodegas Alto Moncayo Garnacha Campo de Borja – Bottle Notes

Bodegas Alto Moncayo is a joint venture of Jorge Ordonez, Bodegas Borsao and others, in conjunction with winemaker Chris Ringland. The youngest vines of Alto Moncayo are 35 years old and the oldest vineyards are over 90 years old. Their focus is exlusively on Garnacha.

Bright crimson in color. 16.6% ABV. Heady nose of red fruits, licorice, roasted herbs and violets. Big, rich and full bodied with ample acidity. Somewhat less voluptuous than my last bottle in 2022. Cherries, kirsch, smoke and tobacco on the palate. Nice length on the finish. The wine has lost its baby fat that was so prominent several years ago and has actually taken on some appealing aged characteristics. Best over the next several years.

My rating: 91 points.

This wine is widely available at $45-$50 per bottle. I know you can find it at your local Total Wine. The 2020 is the current release and I suspect the 2021 will show up soon as well. I’m a buyer.
