Marcel Lapierre took over the family domaine from his father in 1973. The winery dates back to the early 1900’s. In 1981 Marcel met Jules Chauvet. A winemaker, researcher and chemist, Chavet preached for natural wines and the traditional methods of Beaujolais. Joined by local vignerons Guy Breton, Jean-Paul Thévenet, and Jean Foillard, Marcel led a group that soon went to the forefront of this movement. Kermit Lynch called this group the Gang of Four, and the name has stuck ever since. Sadly Marcel passed away in 2010. His son Mathieu and daughter Camille continue the work that their father pioneered, now introducing biodynamic vineyard practices and ensuring that Marcel’s legacy lives on.
Ruby red in color. 13.5% ABV. Pretty nose of red fruits, baking spices and forest floor. Medium body with perfect acidity. Light, crisp and refreshing. Tart cherry, strawberry, earth and minerals on the palate. Tremendous length on the finish. Absolutely delightful Beaujolais that is so easy to drink. Best over the next several years but my bottles will likely be gone by the end of Summer.

Despite price increases in recent years Marcel Lapierre Morgon is still one of the great wine values in the world. The 2020 vintage was recently released and should be available in the $40 range. One of the very few wines that I would still consider buying by the case.
