2016 Hartford Family Winery Zinfandel Russian River Valley Old Vine – Bottle Notes

Hartford Family Winery was founded in 1994 as a result of Don and Jennifer Hartford’s appreciation for the wines, the people, and the unique vineyards near their Russian River Valley home. Located in the Sonoma County town of Forestville, the winery is about 15 miles from the cool Pacific Coast. Jeff Stewart is the Hartford Family Winemaker.

Purple in color. 15.5% ABV. Intoxicating nose of red and black fruits, licorice and baking spices. Big, rich and plush. Full bodied with just enough acidity. Notable balance. Raspberry liqueur, boysenberry, earth and pepper on the palate. Exceptional length on the finish. Heady Zinfandel and not for the faint of heart. Absolutely delicious but you will need to pick your audience correctly. Best over the next 2-3 years.

My rating: 92 points.

You may still be able to find the outstanding ’18 vintage of Hartford Family Zinfandel, otherwise, be on the lookout for the ’19 version which should be available soon. .

  1. Tom, I have really enjoyed Hartford’s OV Zin quite a bit down the years. A decent value at ~$30/per or thereabouts. Always a plush but balanced mouthful and one to savor. I can’t always find it locally but when I do it’s like a visit from an old friend. Cheers.
