Fattoria di Felsina is an historic estate in the Chianti appellation of Tuscany. In 1966 the estate was purchased by the Poggiali family, and today a second generation of the Poggiali family still run the estate. At the edge of the Chianti Classico and Chianti Colli Senesi denominations, the estate counts 475 hectares, of which 61 are planted with vineyard. Gambero Rosso, Italy’s leading wine journal, has often awarded Felsina’s wines with 3 Bicchieri, the journal’s highest rating.
Dark crimson in color. 14% ABV. Gorgeous nose of red fruits, road tar, flowers and iron. Medium body with ample acidity. Rustic and somewhat approachable. Black cherries, plums, anise and earth on the palate. The finish is long and supple with drying tannins. So good at 13 years of age. It is difficult to think of many wines that age so well at this price point. Best over the next 2-3 years.
My rating: 92 points.
Rancia is a very good value. Look for the 2016 at about the $50 price point. Exceptional, age worthy wines that are worth seeking out.
