2000 Marcarini Barolo La Serra – Bottle Notes

Marcarini Winery dates back six generations. The Marcarini estate covers 25 hectares and is situated in La Morra in Piedmont.  In sourcing fruit for their Barolo,  the family owns vineyard plots in La Morra comprising two of the areas best vineyards, Brunate and La Serra.  Each is bottled as a separate wine. The wines of Marcarini are fiercely traditional.

This bottle was decanted for a little over two hours.

Light red in color. 14% ABV. Stunning nose of red fruits, leather, flowers and road tar. Medium body with exquisite acidity. Concentrated and powerful. Rustic and fiercely traditional. Dried cherries, tobacco, herbs and licorice on the palate. Tremendous length on the finish with coarse, drying tannins. Classic Marcarini from an exceptional vintage. Properly cellared bottles will drink well for another decade.

My rating: 94 points.

Marcarini is a bargain compared to other top notch Barolo. Bottles of the Brunate and La Serra can typically be found for $75. The wines age for decades.

  1. Sounds like a very nice Barolo, Tom! One of the best things about Barolo is the aroma. I would be happy just to sniff the wine, even if I couldn’t taste. Cheers!
