Zinfandel of the Month – 2011 Marietta Cellars Angeli Cuvée

Zinfandel of the Month is a regular feature on Zinfandel Chronicles. Keep in mind that although the Zinfandel of the Month might be an older bottle, the current vintage will be one you can find at retail or via the mailing list.

The June Zinfandel of the Month is the 2011 Marietta Cellars Angeli Cuvée.

Marietta Cellars was founded by Chris Bilbro in 1978. Chris was inspired by his aunt Marietta hence the origin of the name. The winery is best know for the Old Vine Red but also makes several other red blends. In recent years Chris’s sons, Jake and Scot, have taken over most of the responsibilities of running the winery.

Blood red in color. 15.2% ABV. Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Carignane. Brambly red fruits, plums, iron and pepper on the nose. Full bodied with nice acidity to keep the jammy fruit in balance. Raspberry compote, earth and blackberry on the palate. Soft tannins on a supple finish. Drink over the next 2-3 years. Nice value at $25.

My rating: 91 points.

Besides running Marietta Cellars Jake and Scot bought Collins Vineyard and the Limerick Lane Winery in 2011. Both Marietta Cellars and Limerick Lane are making some really exciting wines. Marietta is widely available at retail but if you want to add some Limerick Lane to your cellar you should consider signing up for the mailing list.
