Avennia was founded in 2012 by Partner/Winemaker Chris Peterson and Managing Partner Marty Taucher. Chris was the first graduate of Walla Walla Community College’s Enology & Viticulture program, and spent the better part of the last decade making wine at Delille Cellars. Chris and Marty’s appreciation for Old World winemaking is reflected in the name: Avennia is inspired by the Roman name for the city of Avignon.
Opaque purple in color. 15% ABV. The fruit is 53% Force Majeure and 47% Boushey Vineyards. Super nose of blue fruits, violets and minerals. Rich and savory. Medium body with great acidity. Blueberries, pepper and blood on the palate. Young and tight still. Tons of potential with a few more years in the cellar.
My rating: 93 points.
A really nice wine for just under $40 at the winery and retail.
Avennia got some well deserved press after faring well in the “Washington verse the World” seminar at Taste of Washington. Definitely a winery to keep your eye on.
