The village of Volpaia sits on a hilltop just north of the town of Radda in the heart of the Chianti Classico region. One of the highest-elevation winery in the Chianti area, Castello di Volpaia owns 46 hectares of vineyards, which are situated at 450 to 600 meters on the southern hillsides leading up to the village.
Ruby red in color. 14% ABV. Fantastic nose of red fruits, tar, anise and flowers. Medium body with perfect acidity. Rustic and charming. Black cherry, menthol, tobacco and spice on the palate. Medium length on the finish. A wine that over achieves for the vintage and the price tag. Best over the next 1-2 years.
My rating: 90 points.
Look for the 2017 version at a little over $30 a bottle.
