Bottle Notes, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

2005 Domaine Isabel Ferrando Châteauneuf-du-Pape Colombis – Bottle Notes

Domaine Isabel Ferrando is owned by Isabel Ferrando who created the estate when she purchased 3.9 hectares of vines. The goal was to create a wine that was distinct from Domaine Saint Prefert, her other Southern Rhone winery. The wine is 100% old vine Grenache made from grapes ranging from 65-100 years of age. 2004 was the debut vintage.

Ruby red in color. 15.5% ABV. Heady nose of red fruits, kirsch liqueur, roasted herbs and garrique. Big and juicy with just a touch of heat on the palate. Strawberries, blood, herbs and pepper on the palate. The finish is exceptionally long. Really delicious but only if you are a fan of modern school Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Needs a long decant or better yet another 4-6 years in the cellar.

My rating: 92 points.

Isabel Ferrando is making super wines at both Domaine Isabel Ferrando and Saint Prefert. I’m not sure about distribution because neither are easy to come by. That being said, they are worth searching for. The ’16 Isabel Ferrando should be available for $75. I’m a buyer, provided I can find it.
