Zinfandel of the Month is a new feature on Zinfandel Chronicles. For a little background please see the first installment published five months ago. Keep in mind that although the Zinfandel of the Month might be an older bottle, the current vintage will be one you can find at retail or via the mailing list.
The March Zinfandel of the Month is the 2012 Bedrock Old Vine.
Bedrock Wine Co. was founded by Morgan Twain-Peterson in 2007 and focuses on small production wines from several of California’ s most treasured and historic vineyards. The lineup of wines at Bedrock is expanding rapidly, but I think the best of the best are the ancient vineyard Zinfandels Morgan is clearly passionate about.
Purple in color. 14.6% ABV. High-toned aromas of red fruits, flowers and minerals. Rich, lush and creamy with bright acidity. Super texture and mouthfeel. Still a little primary on the palate with great flavors of raspberry, strawberry and boysenberry. On the finish I pick up a hint of pepper and dark chocolate. Great Zinfandel at a great price. Drink over the next 2-4 years.
My rating: 92 points.
This wine was only $20 at the winery. The secret is out about Bedrock but I still think wineries like Ridge, Ravenswood and Turley are better known by fans of the Zinfandel grape. This won’t be the case for much longer.
Run, don’t walk, to get on the mailing list at Bedrock.
I’ve blogged about Bedrock previously in Zinfandel Chronicles Power Rankings.
