This past Saturday my girlfriend and I hosted dinner on a perfect evening for outdoor dining in Seattle. My longtime best friend Sean came over and brought a magnum of 2002 Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley. Unfortunately, his wife came down with covid and was unable to make it. Also in attendance were great friends from years past: Paul and his wife Tina. Paul and I go way back and it was our mutual interest in wine in the early 90’s that was instrumental in my lifelong passion for great bottles. I’d been in touch with Paul and Tina over the years but this was my first time raising a glass with them in about a decade.
The occasion was big so I wanted to open something memorable to complement the meal and landed on the 2012 Thomas Pinot Noir Dundee Hills from Willamette Valley. Of course we started the evening with Champagne and wrapped up the night with Port but the real highlights were the two magnums. I posted a Bottle Note on the Thomas a few days ago and have included notes on the Silver Oak below.
2002 Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley – From magnum. Dark crimson in color. 13.6% ABV. Spectacular nose of black fruits, cigar box and leather. Full bodied with rich, lush fruits and resolved tannins. Black currants, cassis and cocoa on the palate. The finish is long and supple. Twenty years in this wine could not be more approachable and enjoyable. Drink them if you have them. My rating: 93 points.
Both wines were absolutely marvelous with grilled flank steak, smashed potatoes baked in olive oil and butter and “poolside” slaw.
As with all dinner parties the evening was about reminiscing about times past, telling stories and catching up on current events. The wines were every bit as good as the company.
