2017 Bedrock Wine Co. Heritage Wine Vineyard Under the Mountain – Bottle Notes

Bedrock Wine Co. was founded by Morgan Twain-Peterson in 2007 and focuses on small production wines from many of California’ s most treasured and historic vineyards. The lineup of wines at Bedrock is expanding rapidly, but I think the best of the best are the ancient vineyard Zinfandels, Morgan is clearly passion about.

This amazing survivor vineyard is indeed ‘under the mountain,’ or more accurately right under the Santa Cruz Mountains. Located in the hills west of Morgan Hill and just north of Hecker Pass, the vineyard lies in a region once heavily planted to vines. Most of the original plantings in the area have given way to housing, shopping malls and the other needs of the sprawling south Bay Area, which makes this vineyard, nestled in the hills, so unique. Farmed by the Gregory family, the vineyard is planted predominately to Zinfandel and Carignan, though some Petite Sirah, Muscat and others exist on the site as well.

Bright crimson in color. 14% ABV. Sublime nose of red and black fruits, anise and pepper. Medium body with perfect acidity. Packed with dark, juicy fruits. Black cherry, black raspberry liqueur, mulberry and pepper on the palate. Exceptional length on the finish. If you are inclined to drink your ’17 Zins on the early side, rest assured this particular bottling will age about as well as any wine in the Bedrock lineup. Best over the next 4-6 years.

My rating: 94 points.

The mailing list at Bedrock is highly recommended. Exceptional wines, fair prices and great customer service. Put your name on the waiting list.
