2016 Bedrock Wine Co. Heritage Wine Vineyard Under the Mountain – Bottle Notes

Bedrock Wine Co. was founded by Morgan Twain-Peterson in 2007 and focuses on small production wines from many of California’ s most treasured and historic vineyards. The lineup of wines at Bedrock is expanding rapidly, but I think the best of the best are the ancient vineyard Zinfandels, Morgan is clearly passionate about.

This vineyard is indeed ‘under the mountain,’ or more accurately right under the Santa Cruz Mountains. Located in the hills west of Morgan Hill and just north of Hecker Pass, the vineyard lies in a region once heavily planted to vines. Most of the original plantings in the area have given way to housing, shopping malls and the other needs of the sprawling south Bay Area, which makes this vineyard, nestled in the hills, so unique. Farmed by the Gregory family, the vineyard is planted predominately to Zinfandel and Carignan, though some Petite Sirah, Muscat and others exist on the site as well.

Crimson in color. 14% ABV. Gorgeous nose of red fruits, citrus and anise. Medium body with mouth watering acidity. Fresh, juicy and bursting with fruits. Raspberry, strawberry, salmonberry and pepper on the palate. The finish is absolutely tremendous. Such an appealing Zinfandel and just perfect on a warm summer night in Seattle. If more Zins were made in this fashion the variety would be more frequently mentioned as a great summer drink. Best over the next 2-4 years.

My rating: 94 points.

The mailing list at Bedrock is highly recommended. Exceptional wines, fair prices and great customer service. Put your name on the waiting list.
