Bottle Notes, Burgundy

2006 Domaine Marquis d’Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Champans – Bottle Notes

The domaine started bottling its own production in the 1920s after the current Marquis’ grandfather, Sem d’Angerville, stood up to the negociants’ corrupt blending practices. As a result and in defiance of them, he became one of the first Burgundy domains to estate bottle their wines. Today the estate is led by Guillaume d’Angerville, farmed immaculately, and is producing some of the best wines in the entire Cote d’Or. A list of their holdings touches all of the village’s great terroirs, including one of the most picturesque vineyards in Volnay and a monopole of the estate, Clos des Ducs.

Ruby red in color. 13.5% ABV. Pretty nose of dried red fruits, earth, flowers and minerals. Medium body with exquisite acidity. Crisp and fresh with an abundance of dark fruits, and a pronounced earth quality. Black cherry, iron, tea and earth on the palate. Tremendous length on the finish. Super Burgundy that picks up weight with time in the glass. I’ll check in on my last bottle in 3 years or so.

My rating: 92 points.

I bought this well over a decade ago for $75. Current vintages go for much more but are probably worth the search if you are so inclined.
