Winding Down the Corona Virus Wine Challenge

As talk begins to move from flattening the curve to restarting the economy I think it is time to bring an end to the Corona Virus Wine Challenge. The whole thing began on Wednesday, March 11th when Covid literally punched us collectively in the face. This was the day most sports leagues began cancelling seasons and many schools began the process of closing down. It was not long after that we were all told to stay home and social distancing became the norm.

On the night of March 11th I promised to open a compelling bottle every night until the virus ran its course. That first bottle was the 2010 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Keefer Vineyard. I won’t list all the bottles opened but other standouts included the 2004 Leonetti Reserve, 2011 Saxum Heart Stone, 2003 Chateau Beacastel and my first 100 point Bottle Note on Zinfandel Chronicles, the 2002 Dalla Valle Cabernet Sauvignon.

That being said, I plan to go out with a bang. I will open bottles 31 and 32 on Friday and Saturday night. I will make sure they are special. As always, you are welcome to join me!

I do hope that I am not being too optimistic about seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. The virus hit Seattle first and things have definitely improved here. Data out of California and New York seems to confirm this as well. I know there is still work to be done but I will go with the experts who are indicating that the situation is getting better.

Thanks to all of you who joined me on this journey. I appreciate your friendship and the sense of normalcy you brought to my life in these trying times.

  1. Great Wine Challenge, Tom! Your post says you’re going out with a bang on Friday and Saturday with bottles 31 and 32, so I figured that only two bottles remained. But, yes, Thursday needs a bottle opened because the challenge was for every night. Looking forward to seeing what you choose for the last three bottles of the Wine Challenge! Cheers!
