2012 Pahlmeyer Merlot – Bottle Notes

Pahlmeyer was founded in the mid-1980s when Jayson Pahlmeyer, a Bay Area lawyer, decided he preferred thinking about wine over reading legal briefs. Pahlmeyer produced its debut vintage in 1986. Jennifer Williams is the current winemaker. Wines produced at Pahlmeyer include the flagship Proprietary Red, Merlot, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. In late 2019 Gallo purchased Pahlmeyer.

91% Merlot, 7% Petite Verdot and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon from Pahlmeyer Estate and Ranch Chimiles Vineyards.

Crimson in color. 15.2% ABV. Heady nose of black and blue fruits, licorice and smoke. Silky, plush and exceptionally well balanced. Copious, rich fruits cascade across the palate. Flavors of black cherry liqueur, blueberry, plums and chocolate. Tremendous length on the finish with supple tannins. One of the top 5 domestic Merlots. Best over the next 2-4 years.

My rating: 94 points.

The 2017 version of this wine, although pricey, is worth considering at about $90 per bottle.
