Bottle Notes, Zinfandel

Zinfandel of the Month – 2012 Rodney Strong Zinfandel Knotty Vines Estate Vineyards

Zinfandel of the Month is a regular feature on Zinfandel Chronicles. Keep in mind that although the Zinfandel of the Month might be an older bottle, the current vintage will be one you can find at retail or via the mailing list.

The May Zinfandel of the Month is the 2012 Rodney Strong Knotty Vines Estate Vineyards.

Rodney Strong was one of the pioneers of Sonoma County’s modern wine industry, an acknowledged visionary who understood the potential that Sonoma County’s soil and climate held for producing world-class wines. A successful dancer before retiring and turning to his second love, winemaking, Rodney Strong Vineyards was established in 1959 as the 13th bonded winery in Sonoma County.

When Rodney Strong acquired acreage on Westside Road just behind the winery he left untouched the 15 acres of old vine Zinfandel that dated back to 1904. That plot is the foundation of the Knotty Vines Estate Vineyards Zinfandel.

Blood red in color. 15% ABV. Brambly black fruits, briar, pepper and plums on the nose. Medium body with juicy acidity. Blackberry, raspberry and black pepper on the palate. Refreshing Zinfandel with a long spicy finish. Lots to like here. Fairly priced at about $25 a bottle. Drink over the next 2-4 years.

My rating: 91 points.

Review based on a sample provided by the winery.

This was a really nice bottle of Zinfandel that definitely exceeded my expecations. Highly recommended.
