Bottle Notes, Zinfandel

2005 Ridge Lytton Springs – Bottle Notes

When I first became interested in Zinfandel the buzz was always around the Three R’s of Zinfandel: Ravenswood, Rosenblum and Ridge. 20 years later Ridge is still at the top of its game, turning out single vineyard Zinfandel from some of California’s most precious vineyards.

Lytton Springs Vineyard dates back to the early 1900’s and is located in the Dry Creek Valley. The 05 Lytton Springs in a blend of 77% Zinfandel, 17% Petite Sirah and 6% Carignane. 14.4% ABV. 12 months in barrel, 20% new American oak, 25% one and two years old, and 55% in three to five-year-old barrels.

Blood red in color. Aromas of baked cherries, raspberries and sandalwood. This wine is reminiscent of framboise liqueur. Slightly jammy with pepper, plums and just a touch of vanilla. Dusty tannins and a long, smooth finish. I’d be inclined to drink this wine over the next few years.

My rating: 91 points.

The wine is readily available at retail for around $35.
