1997 Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon – Bottle Notes

1997 Spotteswood Cabernet

Spottswoode made their first Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1982 vintage and is one of the true iconic Cabernet producers in Napa Valley. The Estate Vineyard and winery are located in St. Helena. They also make an exceptional Sauvignon Blanc, a 2nd Cabernet called Lydenhurst and a Rhone blend known as Field Book.

1997 was a much heralded vintage in Napa Valley. Over the years though many of the top wines have failed to age as well as one would expect from an excellent year. The 97 version of Spottswoode is certainly an exception. The wine is purple in color. Layers of cherries, plums, cassis, leather and graphite wash across the palate. Brilliant acidity and still substantial tannins on this 15 year old wine. This wine should continue to age well but for my money there is no reason to not drink it now.

The 2009 vintage of Spottswoode is available via the winery or in select wines stores.  Although expensive at $145 per bottle, I would contend that Spottswoode has earned the right to charge a premium price.
